The US, where hotel rooms are designed to let you rest and not to show-off, where the beef in your pasta is real, where tap water is so clean it can be drinked, where the society is so legalistic there is a backlash. How did we get here? What does it take for a country to get here? How long is there still for China to go?

Songjiang Square Pagoda - beautiful, moving architecture. There’s something to be said about the simple and elegant style of Tang Dynasty design - that it is able to connect with you emotionally through clear geometric arrangements and sparing use of decorative flourishes.

Yummy foods from Macau. It’s funny Maxim’s (a chain bakery out of Hong Kong I think) makes much better Macau egg tarts and pork chop buns than the place found on the (admittedly touristy) market - and cheaper too.
